Virginia Shakespeare Festival Plays in Williamsburg this Summer

Williamsburg Virginia is a historic vacation destination that celebrates colonial America. It is also a town known for celebrating the arts. This summer, they continue that tradition with the Virginia Shakespeare Festival.

The town of Williamsburg shares a history with Shakespeare, as they hosted the first professional production of Shakespeare in the New World. The Hallam Troupe, having broke with London’s New Wells Theatre, arrived in Williamsburg in 1753 and performed The Merchant of Venice.

Today, Williamsburg continues to celebrate Williams Shakespeare with its 33rd Annual Shakespeare Festival.

The 2011 season features productions of The Comedy of Errors and Hamlet. The Comedy of Errors is scheduled to take the stage July 6-July 17, while Hamlet will be performed July 21-July 31. All performances are in the main auditorium of Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall on the college of Williams & Mary campus. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, with 2pm show times on Sunday.

Reserve your Williamsburg vacation today to enjoy culture, the arts and living history at attractions like Colonial Williamsburg.
